"Education is the most empowering force in the world. It creates knowledge, builds confidence, and breaks down barriers to opportunity." - Helle Thorning-Schmidt
Our Mission
The mission of the Charger Pride Scholarship Foundation is to aid students of Tulsa Memorial High School in the pursuit of their post-secondary education through the awarding of scholarships and other assistance directly related to enrollment and success in higher education or career training.
We are mainly alumni of Tulsa Memorial High School. We are also friends and parents of students who are interested in helping young people advance their education beyond Memorial.
The idea to form an organization to help Memorial students with a scholarship program was hatched at the 40th reunion of Memorial’s Class of 1973, which took place in October 2013. The following May we were chartered in the State of Oklahoma as the Charger Pride Scholarship Foundation, Inc., a not-for-profit corporation. In September of 2014, the IRS approved us as a 501(c)(3) public charity.
In the spring of 2015, the Foundation awarded its first round of scholarships to Memorial students, totaling $10,250. That entire amount was raised from members of the Class of ’73. In June 2015, we made presentations to several classes holding reunions in Tulsa to raise awareness of our mission, resulting in contributions from Memorial alums from classes of 1975, 1980, and 1985.
Since the founding of our organization, the Class of ’73 has remained a stalwart supporter of Charger Pride, most recently raising nearly $50,000 leading up to their 50th reunion in the fall of 2023. Many other classes have had members contribute to help fund college and career-training scholarships for Memorial students. The classes of 1971, 1972, and 1978 have been particularly generous, all sponsoring scholarships in their class’s name. In all, alumni from 24 different Memorial classes have donated to Charger Pride.
As of 2024, the Foundation has awarded $273,750 in scholarships to 162 Memorial students. Almost all of that has been scholarships for college-bound students, but some has also gone to students who enrolled in career-training programs.
Our board of directors has expanded from people on the original board who were from the Class of ’73 to our current board that is represented by five different classes, including a director who was awarded a Charger Pride scholarship in 2015!
